OEM engineering brief

Application Engineering Guide

Automotive and EV thermal programs do not buy a catalogue 12 V coil. They buy a part that still pulls in after heat soak, vibration and voltage dip, and that can be repeated under IATF change control. This is the brief we use with OEM and Tier-1 teams.

Name the circuit first

  • Thermal / coolantBattery, inverter and cabin loops. Glycol mix, high duty, aggressive ambient.
  • HVAC actuatorsTight envelope, low noise, often PWM.
  • Pneumatic brake / auxiliary airFast switching, contamination, wide voltage range.
  • Auxiliary fluidWasher, suspension, locker, oil. Each has its own seal and cleanliness spec.

Coolant and cabin-air coils almost never share a winding spec even when both are 12 V.

What belongs on the RFQ

  • Voltage window12 V or 24 V nominal, plus jump-start and dump limits. Design to the dip.
  • DutyContinuous, PWM or pulses. 100% ED is a different copper stack than a parking-brake pulse.
  • TemperatureUnder-hood or under-pack numbers, not cabin.
  • Force at hot resistanceStroke, pull-in after heat soak, residual magnetism after key-off.
  • Sealing & vibrationConnector, IP, salt, glycol compatibility.
  • Quality packageIATF 16949, PPAP, IMDS, change control, traceability.

Why “same voltage, same size” fails

  • Heat soakHot resistance rises, force falls, valve does not crack open.
  • VibrationBobbin or encapsulation creeps; the winding abrades.
  • Connector stack-upIP-rated on the bench, leaks after cable OD and gasket change.
  • Residual magnetismHolds a hydraulic or air valve slightly open after key-off.

We validate temperature rise and pull-in on the intended tube/armature, not on a generic C-frame.

OEM path

  1. Prototype — envelope, winding and connector frozen against your drawing.
  2. DVP — environmental tests on your fixture.
  3. Process — FMEA, control plan, lot traceability.
  4. SOP — same revision rules a Tier-1 expects.

FAQ

Do you have IATF 16949?

Yes. Ask for the current certificate and the plant that will run your part — certificates are site-specific.

Can you reverse-engineer a Tier-1 sample?

We can measure envelope, resistance, turns and connector, then propose an equivalent. Production release still needs your drawing.

12 V EV vs 12 V ICE — same coil?

Often no. Ambient, coolant-valve dwell time and PWM differ. Treat them as two applications that share a voltage class.

What kills coils in warranty?

Over-temperature, ingress at the connector, and voltage drop at pull-in. Share the worst-case voltage and enclosure thermal model early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Professional answers for OEM/ODM and technical requirements from our engineering team.

OEM / ODM

Can you customize voltage and dimensions?
Yes. Our in-house engineering team supports full customization of voltage ratings (DC 6V-48V, AC 110V-240V), coil dimensions, mounting configurations, and connector types. We have completed over 500 custom specifications for European appliance brands, with tooling turnaround as fast as 15 working days.
Do you support OEM/ODM projects?
Absolutely. With 20+ years of OEM/ODM experience serving global appliance manufacturers, we provide end-to-end project support -- from concept design, DFM analysis, and prototyping through to mass production. Our dedicated project managers ensure seamless communication and on-time delivery for annual contracts exceeding USD 5M.
Can you develop based on our drawings or samples?
Yes. We accept 2D/3D drawings (STEP, IGES, DWG) or physical samples for reverse engineering. Our engineering team conducts thorough feasibility analysis, provides DFM feedback within 3 business days, and delivers functional prototypes within 10-15 days. We also sign NDAs to protect your intellectual property.

Technical

What insulation classes are available?
We offer insulation classes B (130°C), F (155°C), and H (180°C) per IEC 60085. Class F is our standard for home appliance solenoids, providing excellent thermal endurance for dishwashers, washing machines, and HVAC valves. Class H is available for high-temperature industrial applications upon request.
What protection grades are supported?
Our solenoid coils are manufactured to IP54, IP65, and IP67 protection grades depending on application requirements. For water-contact appliances such as dishwashers and coffee machines, we typically recommend IP65 with epoxy-encapsulated construction for reliable moisture and dust resistance over the product lifecycle.
Can the coils work continuously (100% ED)?
Yes. We design solenoid coils for 100% duty cycle (continuous operation) using high-purity copper wire and Class F/H insulation systems. Thermal management is optimized through precise winding calculations and material selection to maintain coil temperature rise within safe limits, even under 24/7 operation in appliance valve applications.
